Transformation into a Digital/Internet Era:2013–2019

On October 1, 2013, KADOKAWA absorbed and merged with its nine consolidated subsidiaries. As an unparalleled mega content publisher and a digital content platformer, the company aims to grow strong by creating free and dynamic IP and expanding its services in the digital and global markets.



  • 2013

    KADOKAWA GROUP PUBLISHING is merged into KADOKAWA GROUP HOLDINGS.
    On June 22, KADOKAWA GROUP HOLDINGS changes its corporate name to KADOKAWA CORPORATION.
    On October 1, KADOKAWA is reborn, merging its nine consolidated subsidiaries.
    A new corporate logo is established. KADOKAWA ASCII RESEARCH LABORATORIES is established.
    KADOKAWA DAIEI STUDIO is established.
    The "Kadokawa EPUB Sensho" label is launched.
    The magazine Weekly Famitsu reaches 1,300 issues.
    The magazine Comptiq commemorates its 30th anniversary, and Tanka its 60th anniversary.
    Magazines Tanka and Haiku start distribution of electronic magazines.
    The magazine Dengeki PlayStation reaches 555 issues.
    CHOBUNSHA joins the group.
    KADOKAWA CONTENTS ACADEMY is established.

  • 2014

    “Shukan Georgia”, a free weekly magazine on smartphones is launched as a joint business with Coca-Cola (Japan) Company, Limited.
    Online comic service “ComicWalker” is launched.
    Worldwide sales of the video game LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW surpassed 1 million copies.
    The magazine Lettuce Club reaches 800 issues.
    Tenyu Nari by Main Koda wins the 33rd Jiro Nitta Prize.
    Newly developed magazine viewer is provided from Book Walker to “d magazine”, a service operated by NTT DoCoMo.
    REINFORCE is established.
    FROM SOFTWARE joins the group.
    Hamon [Expulsion] by Hiroyuki Kurokawa wins the 151st Naoki Prize.
    The accumulated total sales of Sword Art Online series from the “Dengeki Bunko” label surpassed 10 million copies nationwide, and 16.7 million copies worldwide.
    On October 1, KADOKAWA and DWANGO integrated to form KADOKAWA DWANGO CORPORATION as the holding company.
    A Bride’s Story by Kaoru Mori wins the Cartoon Grand Prize 2014.
    The First School by KADOKAWA Contents Academy “KADOKAWA International Edutainment Taiwan” was founded in Taiwan.
    MUBICHIKE changes its corporate name to EIGA WALKER.

  • 2015

    The corporate organization restructured from brand companies to departments based on business domains.
    The KADOKAWA Fujimi building is completed.
    Agreement on coordination and cooperation has been concluded with Kyoto Prefecture.
    Shika no Oh by Nahoko Uehashi wins the 2015 Booksellers Award.
    Tokorozawa “COOL JAPAN FOREST Concept” has been announced.
    TOKOROZAWA SAKURATOWN was established.
    The new label for web novels “KADOKAWA BOOKS” is launched.
    Overlord, which was originally a web novel became a big hit by animated adaptation.
    Dengeki Bunko’s fair commemorating accumulated release of over 3000 titles has been held.
    Gakunen Biri no Gyaru ga 1-nen de Hensachi wo 40 agete Keio Daigaku ni Geneki Goukaku shita Hanashi by Nobutaka Tsubota won the 49th Shimpu Prize, and the accumulated total of hard cover and paperback sales surpassed 1 million copies.
    The magazine Weekly ASCII was digitized.
    The magazine New Type and ASUKA commemorates its 30th anniversary.
    On October 1, KADOKAWA DWANGO CORPORATION changes its Japanese corporate name to カドカワ. (Company name in English did not change)
    SIM card for inbound tourists “J Walker SIM” is released.
    KADOKAWA GEMPAK STARZ joined the group.
    “Kadokawa Manga Gakushu Series Nihon no Rekishi” label is launched.

  • 2016

    Web novel posting site “Kakuyomu” is launched.
    Yen Press was established as a joint venture with Hachette Book Group, one of the leading publishers in the United States.
    Strategic alliance with Crunchyroll, a leading anime streaming service in the United States was announced.
    Kadokawa Pictures commemorates its 40th anniversary.
    Mr. José Mujica, former President of Uruguay visited Japan commemorating the release of Kadokawa Bunko paperback José Mujica The Poorest President in the World.
    KADOKAWA AMARIN was established as a joint venture with Thailand’s largest publisher, Amarin Printing and Publishing PCL.
    Chinese major internet and mobile service provider Tencent became the second largest shareholder of GUANGZHOU TIANWEN KADOKAWA ANIMATION & COMICS CO., LTD., as our strategic partner.
    Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma Won the 20th Tezuka Osamu Bunkasho Manga Prize.
    Sword Art Online series from the “Dengeki Bunko” label surpassed 19M copies worldwide.
    Your Name. became a big hit by animated film adaptation.
    Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- became a big hit by adaptation to animation series.
    Online high school "N High School" was established.

  • 2017

    The magazine Japan Walker Malaysia is launched.
    Literary information site “Kadobun” is launched.
    COOL JAPAN TRAVEL, INC. was established as a subsidiary of KADOKAWA ASCII RESEARCH LABORATORIES, INC., starting an alliance with WILLER, INC.
    EIGA WALKER changed its corporate name to MOVIE WALKER, CO., LTD.
    "Japan's 88-Site Anime Pilgrimage, 2018 Edition" was announced by the ANIME TOURISM ASSOSIATION.
    Kadokawa Shin Jigen Newly Revised Edition was published after 23 years since the former edition was published in 1994.
    Agreement on promoting tourism in Miyagi Prefecture has been signed between Miyagi Inbound DMO and Pasona Inc.
    The accumulated sales of The Miracles of the Namiya General Store by Keigo Higashino surpassed 12 million copies worldwide, becoming a huge long run hit by media mix both domestically and internationally.
    GZBRAIN was established.

    NHK begins broadcasting Historical Drama for 2018 Segodon, based on the novel by Mariko Hayashi.
    Construction of Cultural Complex “Tokorozawa Sakuratown” started in Higashi-Tokorozawa, Tokorozawa City.
    Movie made by Japan-China co-production Legend of the Demon Cat is released in Japan.
    A new Literary Award “Yokomizo Seishi Mystery & Horror Award” is established, integrating former awards “Yokomizo Seishi Mystery Award” and “Japan Horror Novel Award”.
    The “Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko” label and “Fantasia Bunko” label celebrate their 30th anniversary.
    The magazine Dragon Magazine celebrates its 30th anniversary.
    Paperback label “Dengeki Bunko” commemorates its 25th anniversary.

    BOOK WALKER Co., Ltd. acquires TRISTA Co., Ltd., integrating e-book related services within KADOKAWA DWANGO CORPORATION group in one place.

    KADOKAWA Becomes Tokyo 2020 Official Supporter in the category of “Books and Magazines Publishing Services”.
    The “Dengeki no Shin Bungei”,“Dragon Novels”, and “Kadobun Novel” labels are launched.
    The animated movie Mirai wins the Best Animated Independent Feature category at the 46th annual Annie Awards, and the grand prize in the animation category of the 42nd Japan Academy Film Prize Awards. The film was also nominated for the Animated Feature Film at the 91st Academy Awards, and in the Best Motion Picture - Animated category at the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
    Nikudan by Akiko Kawasaki wins the 21st Oyabu Haruhiko Award.
    Coverage of cinema complex in which advance movie ticketing service “mubichike”, run by MOVIE WALKER, could be used reached up to 100% nationwide.

    Areyo Hoshikuzu by Sansuke Yamada wins the grand prize in the comic category of the 48th Japan Cartoonist Association Awards, and the shinsei award of the 23rd Tezuka Osamu Bunkasho Manga Prize.
    From Software’s game SEKIRO:SHADOWS DIE TWICE was simultaneously released worldwide, and became a smash hit surpassing 2 million copies 10 days after release. It won Award of Excellence in the Japan Game Awards 2019, and Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game in The Game Awards 2019.
    Nonohana Tsushin by Shion Miura wins the 25th Shimase Renai Bungaku Award.
    Number of monthly members of the “nico nico channel” run by DWANGO reached one million.
    Anime Tourism Association opens the ”Fudasho #1" of the 88 Anime Pilgrimage spots in KADOKAWA Fujimi Bulding.
    DWANGO and KADOKAWA GAME LINKAGE become subsidiaries.
    Management structure changed from management by directors to business headquarters.
    On July 1st, KADOKAWA CORPORATION transformed into an operation holding company, by carrying out an absorption-type company split. Businesses and the corporate name of KADOKAWA DWANGO CORPORATION was transferred and changed to KADOKAWA CORPORATION.
    Former KADOKAWA CORPORATION changed its name to KADOKAWA FUTURE PUBLISHING, and transformed into an intermediate holding company, managing production and distribution of print publication businesses.
    Entertainment facility complex “Narita Anime Deck” and anime goods shop “Kyushu Anime Deck” were launched.
    Dengeki Bunko paperback series The Irregular at Magic High School surpassed ten million copies.
    Sekai Ichi Oishii Tenuki Gohan by Harapeko Grizzly wins the grand prize, and Ohitorisama no Attaka Ikkagetsu Shokuhi Ni Man-en Seikatsu by Mariko Ozu wins the comic award in the cooking category of the 6th Recepe-bon Awards in Japan.
    The Chemical History of a Candle was mentioned by Mr. Akira Yoshino, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 as the book which awakened his interest in science. It was promptly reprinted, and the production of first 10 thousand copies was finished within 2 working days using our new digital book manufacturing system.
    The company wins a prize in the publishing category of Walt Disney Japan Consumer Product Commercialization LICENSEE OF THE YEAR 2019.
    Business Produce Division wins the Google2019 Web Monetization Master Program “Hisui” award.

    KADOKAWA CRAFT was authorized as a special subsidiary. GEEXPLUS and WALKER MEDIA were founded.
    TAIWAN KADOKAWA commemorates its 20th anniversary since establishment.
    The “Kadokawa Bunko” paperback label commemorates its 70th anniversary. The magazine 3 Minute Cooking celebrates its 45th anniversary, CIEL, Da Vinci, Monthly Dengeki Daioh, Monthly Shonen Ace, and Dengeki PlayStation their 25th, and Weekly Famitsu reaches 1,600 issues.
